Have you ever observed a dogs behaviour, and noticed that it barks at certain people, avoids certain people, and adores others? have you ever asked yourself, what is that actually based off, what is the dog seeing, smelling or sensing, that the human cannot, in milliseconds? its seems obvious, and generally, we will glance over the fact that dogs do this, we have all encountered dogs and seen them show differing behaviours to differing people. But, when you actually think about it, it is pretty outstanding what they are able to do. Dogs have no concept of the english language, before any communication has occured between a dog and a human, the dog has already made its judgement and, most of the time, is correct in its judgement. Humans, although we get gut feelings about people, need time to feel eachother out, communcation and talking to understand the pyschology of another human being. But dogs understand a persons pysche immediately. Thus, the question? what is the dog seeing that i am not? is a very interesting one in my opinion. Studies done on dogs, have shown that they are able to pick and choose and be particularly beggy for food from humans who are more attentive and pushy. Instantly the dog, before ever having known the human can pick this information about a human up.
I find it interesting to think about the idea that, As humans, we chose to develop, or what allowed us to survive, evolutionarily, was to build up the intelligence and logic centres in our brain, to increase our IQ, our memory and our consciousness increased and we became smarter than our animal mates which allowed us to survive and reproduce. However, what is the cost of building the IQ? Well, i think the EQ, the emotional quotient, The ability to sense what another is feeling. The innate sense of being good, knowing the difference between right and wrong, before being told the difference between right and wrong. I think this is observed, when we look at child behaviour, before being disciplined by an adult. The child, before being told, has no concept of the difference between right and wrong (emotionally) it cannot understand the feelings of another, because it has no concept of another persons feelings. In dogs this does not appear to be the case. Dogs, from a very early age, have been shown to understand when a human being is feeling sad, happy, angry or excited etc. The dog can sense the emotional state of a human, despite it having no knowledge that emotional states exist in the intellectual sphere of human thought. Further studies have shown, that those with High IQ scores, generally tend to score low on EQ, and people with high EQ tend to score lower on IQ. I think that somewhere along the line of consciousness the two factors are in constant balance and contest with eachother and if one is high the other is low. Now, when we come onto the idea that dogs have little to no IQ, i think, that the EQ of a dog, is exceptional, I think that dog behaviour, is what is missing from the life of humans, all with exceptionally high IQs, but we can not tell the emotional states of one another, we feel as though we must intellectualize eachother, in order to understand each other. The dogs exceptionally high EQ is the missing piece for humans, and thus, it became mans best friend, a different survival technique developed by the dog to survive and reproduce, a different evolutionary tale.
The evolutionary technique of the dog, Is an interesting one, the question is, was it a better one than used by the human being? dogs sit second in command to the human, but they have no knowledge of that, and an important question to ask is, is the dog happier than the human, on average? does a dog, by way of their evolution, have acsess to a greater quality of life than the average human. Well i think so, on average. I think it is important to know however, that due to the high EQ of dogs, they likely feel emotions very strongly, and thus are more sensitive, so when a dog is given a good life, they are able to experience extreme happiness, happiness that the human, quite simply cannot feel, because the EQ of the human is much lower. However, the sad story is that, when a dog is not treated well, it can experience extreme sadness, which the dog will struggle to get over in its lifetime. It is interesting, becaue the EQ center of the brain, is what humans are most attached to, without EQ there is no love, there is no happiness there is no sadness, these are the emotions that stories and tales have been built on, and yet, as humans, we strive for IQ, probably decreasing our feelings, but increasing our ability to build.
